Holi is a popular ancient festival, also known as the “festival of love”, the “festival of colors”, and the “festival of spring. It originated and is predominantly celebrated in India, but has also spread to other regions of Asia and parts of the Western world through the diaspora from the Indian subcontinents. Holi celebrates the arrival of spring, the end of winter, the blossoming of love and for many it is a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships.
I clearly remember that when I was child (around 10 years old) at the evening of Holi me and my friends visit each and every house of my village and pay respect to elders. The elders give food, sweets to eat and sister in laws pour color on us. But after that I did not get chance to visit my village so often, especially on the occasion of Holi. Last year, after 15 years I celebrated this festival with my villagers. It was great fun being with them.
The festival also celebrates the beginning of a good spring harvest season. It lasts for a night and a day, starting on the evening of the Purnima (Full Moon day) falling in the month of Phalguna, which falls around the middle of March. There are many religions, castes, races, and ethnicities in India so when this festival comes to all mix-ups with each other and become one likewise if all colors mix together then we can differentiate which is red, blue, and so forth. likewise, all religions, castes, races, and ethnicities become one. this is the beauty of India and Indians. This depends on individuals’ perception that how thinks and celebrates.
